ABSTRACT A chemical sensor is a small device that transforms chemical information in an analyte of interest into an electronic signal which can be measured. During the beginning of chemical sensor research, this method was applied to analyze chemical species by observing the chemical reaction that occured in solution. An improvement to the chemical sensor has been done by immoblising the chemical reagent on the transducer and the chemical reaction that occur on the surface of the electrode can be observed. Optical chemical sensor is based on the amount of light which has been absorbed or transmitted as the result of a reaction between immobilised reagent and the analyte. In optical sensor, the light will be guided by the optical fiber to the photodetector. Photodetector will detect the changes in the absorbance or reflectance intensity at certain wavelength. Optical method gives a significant impact on the current chemical sensor technology and have many advantages compared to other method since it involve cheap and readily available light source. Till today, research on optical chemical sensor research is pursued actively and also involve recent technology on electronic, biotechnology, nano technology, advanced material and physics.The use of advanced material such as microchips, nanoparticles and biomaterial in the development of optical chemical sensor has contribute to the enhancement of the sensitivity and selectivity of the sensor, allow the use of nanoquantity of the sample and simple procedures. Combination of artificial intelligence technology such as artificial neural network (ANN) with optical chemical sensor will allow the information and data processing been done in order to determine the concentration
